Surprise Friday Linkpost

2011 July 15

Hello! Steve B here, filling in for our Ed this Friday, as she’s surrounded by majestically-towering amounts of illustration for the upcoming New Cross Turn Left.

You may have noticed that we like comics, art and animation here at BadRep Towers, so some of this week’s links were apparently made JUST FOR US:

  • Firstly a great piece on Japan’s Studio Ghibli, and how they’ve had real, heroic female characters for years, making deep art while Disney are still playing catch-up. (Some of BadRep argue about whether ‘Princess Mononoke’ or ‘Spirited Away’ is the better film. Everyone loves Totoro, of course.)
  • New webcomic Lady Sabre and the Pirates of the Ineffable Aether! It’s Lady Space Pirates. Seriously. They couldn’t have written anything more BadRep if they’d included flying space sharks (which they might still do, given the setting!) The comic has just launched, but really – how you can not love something when the poster looks like this?
  • Artist Lauren Redniss has created a truly beautiful book on the life of the first woman to win the Nobel Prize (and then another Nobel Prize), Marie Curie. Not just that, but she’s developed each page using Cyanotype – the process for making blueprints. Amazing work of art on an equally amazing scientist!
  • The trailer for Pixar’s next movie got us very excited, and Amanda over at TheMarySue agrees – she’s listed 20 reasons to be excited about “Brave”.

Oh god the pain of this decision.

Markgraf is on the fence. He says “BOTH”.

Others on twitter are also hoping they will be allowed to love both. But no! GET OFF THE FENCE, I SAY

Hang on… aren’t I still on the fence? Urk!

I like what Mononoke does very much with rejection of heroine romance endings and with Lady Eboshi, who is complex and sympathetic. I wish Mononoke herself got a few more lines- I think the movie crams a *lot* in (Ghibli does, mind).

Anyone seen Kiki’s Delivery Service or Nausicaa?

            I have seen neither.

*is exiled from BadRep forever in shame*

Mononoke all the way – not only is it a far more original, thoughtful tale with less cliched characters to my mind, but I always feel like earlier Ghibli movies did most of the good bits of Spirited Away better.

Grave of the Fireflies is also very good, but I will never, ever watch it again (oh god the sads).

I have Grave of the Firelies on my shelf …still in the wrapping, because I’ve never been brave enough to watch it, or in need of that much depression :)

I’d like to suggest Nausicaa instead – I loved that.
